About the Franklin Farm Documentary DVD (47 minutes) The Franklin Farm documentary DVD is an in depth look at everyday life on a diversified organic family farm. David and Mary Ellen Franklin and their three young sons work together to make this a healthy, productive, and sustainable farm. The filming of the movie took place over the course of an entire year. You will see that as the seasons change, so do the chores July 22, 2011p>Spring is a time of birth and renewal. Babies are born and need to be cared for. Calves, chicks, and piglets, need to be fed and kept clean and dry. It’s also time to plant and tend to the family garden. The pasture fences need to be repaired so the cows, young stock, and horses can be turned out to graze. Summer is the season when we put up all the hay that will be feed during the long winter. See first hand how large round bales are made and then wrapped. There are many chores to do and it is a very busy time on the farm. Summer goes by fast and all too soon it’s autumn. As the days shorten and temperatures start to drop, the trees here in southern Vermont put on an incredible display of color. Preparations are made to bring the animals in from pasture. Logs and firewood are cut. The kids go back to school. Lucky for us, the pace around the farm is a little slower in the winter. However, there is still plenty to do. Milking, feeding, and keeping the barns clean are chores that have to be done no matter what the weather. And finally, as winter draws to a close, the maple sugaring season begins. In late February the whole family heads to the woods to tap the maple trees. As the days lengthen and begin to warm, the sap begins to flow in the trees. A small portion of the trees total sap is harvested via tap, tubing, and tank. The sweet sap is then put in our big stainless steel pan and boiled down to make some of the best tasting maple syrup in Vermont! Sugarmaker Dave will walk you through the whole process. All of this and more is captured on The Franklin Farm DVD. At a time when fewer and fewer people are directly connected to agriculture, this movie presents an accurate and entertaining picture of what life on a small family farm in Vermont is like. This is a movie kids of all ages will love and learn from. Hope you like it, maryellen at franklinfarmstore dot com Last Updated: July 22, 2011 Copyright © 2007-2009 [Franklin Farm].
